Robert Louis Kolek went home to his Lord on January 25, 2022, just shy of his 87th birthday. He was born in Pittsburgh on February 5, 1936 to Anthony Kolek and Anna Zolnowski-Kolek. Although he lived in California for much of his professional career, Robert was always a Pittsburgher at heart: a true iron-born son of the greatest city in the world. He grew up in Lawrenceville, graduated from Central Catholic High School, earned degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in 1958, and married the love of his life at St Stanislaus in the Strip District in 1968. Throughout his career, he helped shape innovation at some of the most iconic Pittsburgh companies of his age including PPG and Westinghouse Research and Development.

Robert was a passionate sportsman, lifelong member of Trout Unlimited, and an environmentalist, long before it was fashionable. He championed the protections of Pennsylvania waterways and fisheries, helping to leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy. Most importantly, he loved his family above all else and always put their needs, safety, and happiness before his own. He was a curious questioner, and his guidance, patience and wisdom will be deeply missed.

Robert is survived by Gloria, his soulmate and wife of 53 years, his sister-in-law Alice, his sons Robert and Patrick, his daughters-in-law Jacqueline and Kirsten, and the grandchildren whom he cherished, Isabella, Robbie, Ethan and Luke. He was preceded in death by his beloved younger brother, Anthony.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022, between 10:00-11:30 a.m. at the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 216 44th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. A Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 noon at St. Stanislaus Church, 57-21st Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Robert will be laid to rest at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Shaler Township.
