Jean Carver passed away on Thursday, February 13th 2025 from complications of pneumonia. She was 91.
Born Jean Louise McFarlane in Buffalo, NY, she was the only child of John Edward McFarlane and Elinor Ruth Sherman McFarlane. She attended Bennett High School in Buffalo, as well as the University of Michigan School of Music, where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music education.
After a short stint teaching in upstate New York, Jean went to Manhattan to pursue a singing career. While there, she met fellow musician Robert Carver and they married in May of 1971. The couple sang in numerous NYC church choirs and, in 1974, performed a program of musical duos at Carnegie Recital Hall. Additionally, Jean was a member of the Schola Cantorum of New York.
Jean and Bob eventually settled in Montclair, NJ and upon retirement, relocated to Pittsburgh to spend time with Jean's mother in Ligonier, PA. While living in Pittsburgh, Jean toured Eastern Europe with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and was a professional chorister at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, as well as a member of the St. Vincent Camerata and the Calvary Episcopal Church Chancel choir.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, 15206, on Saturday, March 1st 2025 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean's memory may be made to Calvary's capital campaign.
