James Gerard Zappa, 73, passed away on September 2nd after a lengthy illness. He was a kind, funny, hardworking, and selfless man whose greatest joy in life was his family. James had a rare gift for putting everyone else before himself. He gave of his time, his energy, and his heart without ever asking for anything in return.

James graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1973 and proudly went on to serve his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. He honorably served four years in the Navy, followed by two years in the Naval Reserves. His commitment to serving others was a reflection of the character he carried throughout his entire life.

Following his military service, James built a long and dedicated career with Bell Atlantic, now Verizon, where he worked for more than 30 years. He was a hardworking and dependable man who took pride in providing for and caring for those he loved.

But James’s greatest accomplishment was his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean, with whom he shared nearly 45 years of marriage. He leaves behind his four children, Julie Aleski (Ryan), John (PattiJackie Berarducci (Anthony), and Janis. He was a devoted father who was always there for his children, putting their happiness and well-being ahead of his own.

James was also a proud and loving grandfather “Tatone” to his eight beautiful grandchildren: Addison, Neeson, Aurora, Gino, Finn, Annalise, Leo, and Felix. They brought him immense happiness, and the memories they made together will be treasured forever.

He is also survived by his sisters Judie Anthony (Albert), Sr. JeanAnne Zappa, OSU of Kentucky, and Patti Carlen. James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Virginia Zappa; his sister, Marleen Roll (Bill); and his brother-in-law, Greg Carlen.

James will be remembered for his kindness, his quick sense of humor, his incredible work ethic, and above all, his selflessness. He was the person who would quietly make sure everyone else was taken care of before thinking about himself. His love was shown through the countless things he did for the people around him, simply because he loved them.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at Good Samaritan Hospice for their compassionate care, kindness, and support during James’s final journey. Our family will be forever grateful to James’s sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Don Zalewski, and their children for the love, care, and support they provided, which helped make it possible for James to spend his final days surrounded by his family.

At James’s request, there will be a private burial.
