The "Unofficial" Mayor of Lawrenceville, passed peacefully surrounded by his family, on Saturday, October 1, 2022. He was 77 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna L. (Geltz) Foley, his two children Ryan C. Foley and Megan K. (William McCabe) Foley, his grandchildren Katie Mae, Colyn, Shayn, Asher and Eryn, his two sisters Kathleen A. (Terrance) Farrell and Marcella M. (Donald) Daniher, his brother Michael J. (Jay) Foley and his brother-in-law Anthony Marando. He was preceded in death by his parents Michael J. and Mary M. Foley, his sisters-in-law Judith A. Marando and Barbara L. Muto and his brother-in-law John Muto.
Jim had deep Lawrenceville roots. He was born in St. Francis Hospital on May 15, 1945. He grew up on 38th Street and attended St. John's School at 36th Street and Liberty Avenue. His grandparents, who lived in the Dough Boy Area, had a corner market at 36th Street and Penn Avenue.
Over 50 years ago, Jim started at the Gribbin Company, a real estate and insurance business that primarily served Lawrenceville and the surrounding areas. He was a founding member of the Lawrenceville Business Association (LBA), where he served as president, vice president and was a board member. In addition to his work with the LBA, Jim served on the Board of Golden Carriage with one term as president, Catholic Youth Association (CYA) as Vice President and on the July Fourth Fireworks Committee. Jim was recognized as the "Man of the Year" in 1994 for his outstanding contribution to improving the quality of life and business environment in the City of Pittsburgh.
Jim was proud of his Irish Heritage and was a Parade Marshall for over 45 years at the City of Pittsburgh's St. Patrick's Day Parade. He was a lifelong member of the 6th Ward Club, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians (AOH) and the Jockey Club. Everyone in Lawrenceville who knew Jim would say that he has never turned down any request from a community group and he was very generous with his time and resources.
Family and friends are welcomed at the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 216 44th Street, Lawrenceville, on Friday, October 7, 2022 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Parish, St. Augustine Church on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
